Healthy Tips for
You and Your APBT.......
Drooling
If your pet suddenly starts drooling when he hasn't before, first check his
mouth. He could have a foreign object lodged, or there could be a gum
infection or a chipped tooth. Drooling could also be caused by poison
(household chemicals, pesticides, etc.) or, in rare cases, by rabies or
other diseases. In any case, sudden drooling can be serious and should be
checked by your vet.
Urine Odors in Carpets
There are a number of good products out on the market to get the urine odors
out of carpets. Elimin-Odor is a good product. Look for a product that has
an enzyme in it that actually destroys the bacteria instead up just covering
up the smell. The real tip here is to be sure to get the urine up
immediately.
Toys For Your Dogs
You can buy all kinds of great toys for your dogs at your local Goodwill or
Thrift Stores. Normally, you'll only find stuffed animals, but if your dog
is like mine they will LOVE stuffed animals. I pay anywhere from a nickel to
a dollar per toy. And most of the time I negotiate a lower price with the
check-out clerk. I left our local Thrift Store just the other day with 10
stuffed animals ranging in sizes and paid $2.27. If you do buy from one of
these stores wash and dry the toys before giving them to your pets and
beaware of things on the toy that a dog can get off and choke on like eyes.
Moldy Foods
That bread or cheese that has gone bad is not good for your dog. Many moldy
foods that have been refrigerated can cause profound muscle tremors and
seizures. So, if it's not good enough for you to eat..don't give it to Fido,
throw it away. Also, moldy walnuts can be a source of the same toxin,
Penitrem A, produced by a fungus, and found in moldy dairy products.
Hot Weather Tip
Don't throw away that used milk carton. Wash it out and add water to it. Put
it into your freezer and let the water freeze. You can use the ice in the
carton (yes you'll have to cut the carton off of the ice....BE CAREFUL) to
cool down your dog's water. (works best for water containers that are
outside)
You can also put the cartoon inside rabbit cages that are outside to help
keep the rabbits from overheating.
Do your outside dogs a favor too and cool them off daily with water or buy a
child size pool and keep it filled for them. |

For a healthy coat...
Give your dog a daily dose of Safflower, Corn, Soybean or Cotton Seed Oil in
their food (1 teaspoon) this really helps them to have a great looking coat
and reduces hair loss.
Dry Skin and Dander
You can use diluted Murphy's soap to bathe your dog if your dog suffers from
dry skin, dander or even some allergies.
The Murphy's soap will clean your dog as well as soothe it's skin.
Always be sure to rinse the dog well.
First-Aid Kit
If you have pets you need to keep a first-aid kit handy
Childproof your Cabinets
Remember to close your cabinets when you are finished looking inside them.
Medicine cabinets and kitchen cabinets can hold products that are dangerous
to your pets.
If your pet can open cabinets then you will need to install childproof
latches. They are very inexpensive and worth your piece of mind. Always be
sure to rinse the dog well.
Cover Those Electrical Wires
If you have a pet that likes to chew through electrical wires try covering
them with a wide strip of electrical tape or spray exposed wires with pet
repellant.
Nose-to-Tail Exam
To keep problems from getting serious, you need to catch them early. Give
your pet a weekly nose to tail exam.
Plastic bowls or Cheap Ceramic Bowls
These bowls have been implicated as a health concern because the plastic may
leach into the food. All plastics release some undetectable fumes,
especially when heated. This out gassing means the fumes can pass into the
foods that are served or stored in the bowl or container. Stainless steel or
glass bowls are recommended.
